Body Wisdom

Stability, Flexibility, Mobility, Strength, Endurance, Agility - this is the language of traditional fitness - and Nia meets each of these with aptitude and harmony.  I also believe in “functional” fitness, in the “dance” of our life.  How might the beauty in the precision of a martial arts block or kick sequence support your mental acuity? Or the imaginary realm of touching the clouds or reaching into your roots creatively connect to the glorious movement of your spine? How does shifting weight and working with our joints meet gardening?  Moments come when we need strength and power and conditioning of the physical body can support that requirement.  And, there are moments that ask us to be fluid and carry grace and compassion; our Nia class experiences create space for that practice and embodiment as well.

There is a vast vocabulary available when our more than 200 bones and 700 muscles create an infinite variety of ways to move the body.  This is the poetry of our somatic experience in these vessels of our bodies.  It is the resonance of over 75 trillion cells meeting our existence.  It is my hope, that we enjoin with its wisdom and expression. Through the tools of the forms and structures in Nia and the opportunities to explore our own uniqueness in free dance, the unity of this experience creates wonder and curiosity.  We stimulate our creativity, enhance our vitality and soften into a relaxed, grounded self.  We leave the distractions behind, including self judgment and expectations, and we step into our experience of each moment in our “now” body and we begin anew.
